It is with great regret that we have had to CANCEL this event for the 2nd Year in a row!
Following the announcement today from the UK Government and the announcement from our Chief Commissioner of Scouts, outlining the need to stop all unnecessary social interaction, stop all face to face meetings for scouting of young people and adults for the foreseeable future; and for all groups of over 50 individual people not to meet, we have had no choice but to CANCEL our event for the 2nd year in a row!
Having cancelled our event last year due to adverse weather conditions causing issues of Health & Safety, we moved the date to later in the year to ensure that the weather would be less of a concern.
All that is left for us to say is thank you to you all that have come back again this year and supported us. We cannot run this event without the participants, the volunteers, the Sponsors and the support of 1st North Leigh Scout Group. We hope to be back again in 2021 and we hope to issue a new date for next year soon. If you have any questions or concerns, then you can still email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will get back to you as soon as we can. Stay safe everyone, keep promoting the Laws of Scouting during what will be a very difficult time for society and help those around us all.
Rest assured you will get muddy! That's half the fun of the day is getting muddy, along with some pretty amasing countryside and a group of great people
What makes us different from the rest is our attention to detail and making life as easy as possible for our participants and team organisers. From signing- up through to parking up on the day, through to Check-in or having a top quality bacon sandwich and a hot chocolate at a check-point on the way around our 18 mile route. We want you all to be having fun and making great memories together! It is also really important to use that you want to come back and jpoin in year after year. That is how we have grown in size from the original hike that saw 24 Scouts and Leaders go out on a hike in 2014 to the over 400 people that take part each year.
NL18 was started in 2014 as an alternative option for Scouts in Oxfordshire to experience a supported long distance hike through some of the most beautiful Cotswold countryside and woodland there is to offer. Concentrating on the little details and things that make life easier for our participants, including dedicated event parking, GPS tracked Teams, event support vehicles, figure of 8 route, dedicated routes for Beavers and Cubs and great home-cooked food. On top of all of this, we offer our participants the opportunity to fund-raise for their Scout Group or Section.
In teams of between 4 and 8 participants, NL18 offers something for every Scouting Section from Beavers through to Network.
We have specifically designed our hike to avoid roads and busy ares for traffic. We have focused on local footpaths and routes that use the natural and beautifully outstanding countryside to guide you around West Oxfordshire on what we hope is a sunny and kind winters day.
There will be areas where we need you to use the roadways and cross roads, but we take the hassle and worry out of this for you. Where our walkers will be using roadways, we are well ahead of you and have signs out to warn traffic well in advance that they are to ecxpect to see walker sand to slow down accordingly. In areas where we think you might need our helpo a little more, we have Hike Helpers there slowing traffic and assisting Teams in crossing roads and keeping safe.
At NL18 we are proud to be fully inclusive and that includes Mans Best Friend! If you have a well-behaved dog, then they are welcome on our hike. We ask that dog owners on our hike take full responsibility for their pet including being in control of the dog at all times, that you clear up behind your dog and that you ensure that no persons or livestock are threatened at anytime by your dog. Simple really.
By taking part in this event, you are contributing to Scouting in Oxfordshire. Any monies raised after event costs have been accounted for are then used to support Scouting in Oxfordshire. This includes Jamborees, purchasing of equipment or providing life changing memories and experiences for Scouts in Oxfordshire. So your support is always very much appreciated and never taken for granted.
But this is an opportunity for your Sections and Groups to fundraise too. Make this part of your Yearly fundraising effort in getting your Beavers, Cubs Scouts, Explorers and Network to get sponsorship for the distance they walk from family, friends and colleagues. We have provided a sponsorship form below to help you get started. Cover your cost of event entry and raise more for your Section or Group this year. Its a fun and adventurous hike that allows you to judge how hard you want to push yourself on the day, through choosing a route for you. And dont forget, if it gets too much, our hike is fully supported with event vehicles that can take you off the course at any check-point should you change your mind or circumstances change for you.
We like to know that you are on track and safe at all times. That is why at NL18 each team gets allocated a GPS Tracker that allows our event team to make sure we know exactly where you are and how things are going for you. Using our radio system that all checkpoints and support vehicles have access too, we can quickly and effectively support all our participants over the course . Something we are very proud of and we feel is essential if you are not walking in a straight line for the full 18 miles!

We have one criteria for any Group joining us on the day. To run this event like we do, we ask that each Group provides us with one Adult helper for the whole day. These duties may include helping with various elements of the event including Checkpoints or Administration.
If you cannot provide Adult help for the whole day for your Group, then the Event Management Team reserve the right to refuse Group participation.
